Our overall vision for 18 Blackfriars Road is to create a place that brings people together. It will provide welcoming spaces that appeal to new and existing residents, and people that work in the new offices or wider area.

Our conversations and consultation with local residents and businesses have suggested three potential themes to us where 18 Blackfriars Road could provide additional community benefit:

• Food & hospitality
• Creativity & performance
• Health & wellbeing

We believe a mix of these could help Southwark communities improve access to culture and art, improve physical and mental health, and find employment.

Food and hospitality

Food can bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together, helping to build a more cohesive community.

Our ideas include:

• A community kitchen for people to come together and share food
• A hospitality training centre to offer training to local residents so they are able to take advantage of the great employment opportunities that the sector has to offer
• A hub for new food brands to showcase their products, providing a destination for the wealth of food talent in Southwark

Performance and creativity  

A natural extension of the areas cultural offer; a special location for making, creating or performing.

Our ideas include:

• An events space providing a wide-ranging and diverse cultural programme, servicing the needs of local creative groups
• Maker spaces for people working within the arts industry, such as costume and set designers
• Opportunities for local residents to experience the arts

Health and wellbeing

A space focused on improving the health of residents, office workers and the wider community of Southwark.

Our ideas include:

• A dedicated space – the first in the borough – to helping Southwark residents look after their mind and body
• A space for wellbeing activities, such as personal training and yoga, and mental health support
• A place for trainers, instructors and practitioners in the wellness sector to study and share knowledge through talks and presentations
